About the Rock River Watershed

Preserving 188.7 river miles of the Rock & Kishwaukee Rivers

The Rock River Watershed Group works to preserve and enhance water quality along the Rock and Kishwaukee Rivers in Northern Illinois. The Watershed includes the counties of Winnebago, Boone, McHenry, Ogle, Lee, and Whiteside in Illinois. By engaging the partnerships of 13 municipal entities and three engineering consulting groups, the RRWG has representatives across the entirety of the watershed.

The Rock River Watershed in Illinois covers 10,915 square miles.

The Rock River Watershed Group Study Area:

  • Covers portions of the Rock, Pecatonica, Sugar and Kishwaukee Rivers
  • Covers 3,867 square miles
  • Has 5,143 miles of rivers and streams
  • Has an elevation change of 137 feet from 725 ft msl at the Wisconsin state line to 588ft at the downstream limit
  • Has a Rock River mainstem length of 126 miles and a gradient of 1.1 ft/mile or a slope of 0.0021%
  • Contains seven low head dams
